Wonderfully summed up. But what happens when wanting to get the words down on paper right so badly that it keeps you from putting them down at all?

Hmm. I always want to have written the story I'm working on. I like the initial day-dreaming, and I really love revision, but I find the initial writing-it-down, making-the-marble part of it very onerous sometimes. Still, since I'm almost done drafting book #2 while still shopping around #1 (after many, many years of revising it and changing the plot significantly), I guess I'm in it for the writing. But what I really like is the writing between the initial draft and the giving-up draft, where I can still pretend that I'm going to come close to the ideal. It's still the story that counts.

This was a fascinating post which I personally found true in my life. I've wanted to write YA fantasy every since I was a teen but after several years of attempting to write I came to realize that I don't enjoy writing fiction. The writing process for fiction is very difficult for me, but non-fiction flows much easier (thus I've been a non-fic writer for 9 years now).

I also want to say that I have been a fan since I was a teenager (that's 20+ years), ever since a friend's mom loaned to me "Caught in Crystal" and some of your other books. I own most of your books and have read many of them several times, especially DEALING WITH DRAGONS, SEARCHING FOR DRAGONS and SORCERY AND CECILIA.

I just finished reading ACROSS THE GREAT BARRIER which I really enjoyed.

Is there any chance there will be a post on: "(And when it does happen, it’s nothing at all like the rosy dreams people have of what it’s going to be like…but that’s a different post, I think)"? I would like to read it.

When I was younger, I would sometimes dream of a glamorous life of a writer. It was a clue I had lost interest in what I was working on at the time.

The getting it right part is particularly nice. When you wrestle a scene onto paper and it's just exactly the way you pictured it in your head and then someone reads it and laughs at the line that was supposed to make them laugh...it's just the loveliest feeling ever. (Okay, maybe not ever. But you know, a really, really nice and fun feeling.)
